Yemen is located next to one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Almost 50% of global cargo by sea pass within Yemeni international waters.
The economy is largely based on oil, shipping and trade. Other traditional exports include coffee and dried or salted fish.
Foreign direct investment is concentrated in key industrial hubs and ports: Al-Hodeidah, Al-Mukalla, Lahj, Aden Free Zone, the Marib Power Plant and Taiz. The corporate income tax is 20% though this rate can be lowered to 15% depending on the size and nature of investment. Customs exemptions may also be available for certain projects.
Yemen is a member of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA) and has signed more than 60 trade and investment agreements including with the United States, France and Germany.

The General Investment Authority has created a One-Stop-Shop to make business registration as simple as possible. Services include market analysis, networking, assistance with the acquisition of land, facilitation and aftercare.
