Key Competitive Attractions
The Syrian economy is based chiefly on agriculture, oil, industry and tourism. The main industries are phosphate and salt mining, textiles, chemicals and food processing. Agricultural products include wheat, cotton, olives, sugar beet, fruits and vegetables.
Syria is part of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA) and has a free trade agreement with Turkey and a prioritised trade agreement with Iran. An association agreement with the EU has yet to be finalised.
In recent years, economic reforms and privatisation of government-owned enterprises have been implemented, though cautiously. The national economy is for the most part centrally planned.
