The University of Leeds has over 3,000 students (HESA 2010) and was ranked 85th in the QS World University Rankings 2010. It was also ranked 8th in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, which identified 61% of the University’s research as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally-excellent’, with a further 32.5% ‘recognised internationally’.
Particular research strengths are in electrical/electronic engineering, food science, modern languages, general engineering, business & management studies, transport planning and geography & environmental studies. The university has ambitions to be included in the top 50 institutions worldwide by 2015, and is investing £300m in new facilities for this purpose. The university’s research capabilities are strengthened by its membership in the White Rose University Consortium, a collaborative research partnership between Leeds, Sheffield and York Universities.
The university is active in the field of business, and has created many successful spin-offs in recent years, and operates serviced offices at the Leeds Innovation Centre where support is available from University research expertise. The Leeds University Business School offers MBA courses, and is ranked 65th globally (QS Top Business Schools Rankings 2010). The university’s Centre for Industrial Collaboration assists various sectors with the development of commercially-viable ideas.
Leeds Metropolitan University has over 27,000 degree students, full and part-time, with the total number including short courses closer to 50,000, making it one of the UK’s largest. It has a national reputation for widening higher education participation, and has been investing £177m in new facilities, including a new home for the Leeds Business School, which offers MBA courses.
Research is also an integral element of Leeds Met’s activities, with research in the fields of sports-related studies being world-leading, and business & management studies, education, library and information management and media studies all being of internationally excellent significance. Leeds Met has extensive links with the business community, and has dedicated incubator units and services for start-up businesses at its city centre campus.
Leeds Trinity University College has recently been awarded university college status, and has over 3,000 students. It specialises in the fields of teacher training, business and media studies.
