Case Studies for Rotherham Investment & Development Office
Toyoda Gosei
Toyoda Gosei is a subsidiary of the Toyota group, which created its first European base in Rotherham, producing rubber weather seals for car doors and windows, resulting in an initial £32 million investment, and projected to generate 400 jobs. A series of multi-million-pound expansions ensued, which have brought the total number of jobs to approximately 700.
In collaboration with Yorkshire Forward, RiDO provided support to Toyoda Gosei with identifying a site in Rotherham. RiDO assisted all phases of relocation, including planning, environmental health, financial support, skills and recruitment, and public relations. RiDO offers continued support to Toyoda Gosei, and help relocate Japanese staff to the area as part of the international expansion project into the UK.
U-Explore
U-Explore has introduced a pioneering technology and methodology into the education system. They are changing the approach to learning via a new technology platform that distributes rich media employer content into classrooms - regionally and nationally. This initiative is supported through key partnerships with local public and private sector businesses and organisations.
RiDO provided U-Explore with a number of services to ease the relocation of their operations following their departure from The Music Factory Entertainment Group. RiDO offered grant assistance, assistance with recruitment, property search services, and links to potential partners.
Newburgh Engineering
Newburgh Engineering is a precise engineering company operating in the nuclear, energy, oil, gas, rail and defence industries. Originally established in 1939 in Bradwell Derbyshire by Isaac Middleton and current MD Vincent Middleton, the company expanded into Rotherham in 2004.
Their purpose built premises were recently expanded to 135,000 sq ft of modern manufacturing space, now employing 140 people. Newburgh is also associated with the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car (SSC) project.
RiDO helped Newburgh during their expansion programme from their Bradwell base. RiDO provided several services to make the transition as easy as possible, including site searches, financial aid, recruitment support, planning assistance, and business support, which is continual.
Marussia Virgin Racing
Dinnington-based Formula 1 team Virgin Racing, initially set up by John Booth as Manor Grand Prix, joined up with Sir Richard Branson's Virgin group. The team had less than a year to build a new team, expand their existing facility and build a formula 1 car.
RiDO helped Virgin by using their local connections and knowledge to identify suppliers for all areas of the business.
RiDO also provided assistance with the relocation of the existing Manor Motorsport team nearby, which allowed the old factory to be used for the new F1 operations. Other services that RiDO were able to provide included recruitment support, financial aid and advice, and help finding partners.
