Creativesheffield - Development Projects
Sheffield offers excellent opportunities for growth. In addition to the strong pipeline of physical developments detailed in the ‘Development Plans` section of this listing, The Economic Masterplan is the primary strategy that underpins Sheffield`s aspirations "to have an economy that matches the best in Europe." Four ambitious targets have been identified:
- Creating an additional 30,000 jobs;
- Bringing an additional 16,000 local people into the workforce;
- Significantly increasing the proportion of companies in the city, in growing high value sectors;
- Up-skilling the workforce to match the types of jobs anticipated in the next decade.
The last ten years have seen sustained growth in jobs and incomes, the City Centre has been transformed, there is a more diverse and competitive local economy, the population is growing and there is a high level of interest and commitment from investors and developers. Creative Sheffield, the UK`s first City Development Company, is charged with delivering Sheffield's continuing economic transformation. Its core activities are:
- Investment - to attract quality inward investment into the city.
- Marketing - to achieve a positive shift in the perception of the city, by attracting and publicising a programme of high-profile events within the city, promoting the it to the outside world, and helping to stimulate the leisure economy
- Regeneration - to develop the city's physical infrastructure to internationally competitive standards, in line with the Sheffield City Centre Masterplan.
- Innovation - to create initiatives that will promote the growth of the city's scientific, creative and cultural knowledge base.
- Business Support Services - support businesses within the city and locating in the city, including access to property databases, HR support, and advice on financial support. Working with partner agencies to create a business-friendly environment.
To compliment the EMP, The City Centre Masterplan sets out a comprehensive strategy for further investment in high-quality physical development, public realm and infrastructure. It identifies the key projects which together will make Sheffield a more attractive, successful and competitive city centre.
To compliment the work of the city`s two universities and other education providers, Creative Sheffield have committed to delivering an enhanced Skills Agenda that will expand upon existing executive education provision, including focused management training in key sectors, (e.g. Advanced Manufacturing and Digital New Media), extended Internship Programmes, and a conscious shift towards increased employer engagement and a joined up approach to identifying and tackling skills gaps.
Sheffield is also continuing to develop an advanced innovation ecosystem, to support the growth of new technology companies. Activity is focussed on creating the right conditions and support systems to accelerate knowledge transfer and commercialisation across target and emerging sectors. Emphasis is on collaboration and partnering, particularly with universities, accelerators, business support agencies and networks.
