Connections By Road

Sheffield sits on the M1/M18 motorway junction, providing excellent links to the rest of the country. The M1 runs past Sheffield en route from London to Leeds; the M18 connects Sheffield to the seaports at Hull. Sheffield is also within 30 minutes of the M62 and A1, the A1 running to Edinburgh via Newcastle.

The Inner Relief Road provides links to all major arterial routes of Sheffield, including the A57 and A61.

According to a GVA Grimley study, Sheffield is the least congested city in England. It also has the 2nd lowest travel to work time in the UK.

Connections By Rail

Trains run hourly to London from Sheffield, with a quickest journey time of just two hours. Direct trains also connect Sheffield with Manchester city centre in under an hour, before running on to Manchester Airport and Liverpool. From Sheffield, there are direct services to Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Plymouth, Newcastle, Bristol, Birmingham and Southampton, among others. Via Eurostar services it is possible to reach Paris from Sheffield in five and a half hours and Brussels in five hours and twenty minutes, with just one change at London St Pancras. From either of these locations the rest of Europe is easily accessible.

The city lies between six international airports, the closest just 20 miles away. The Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport lies to the north east of the city, handling over 1 million passengers per year and flying to destinations all over the globe, including Finland, Italy, Spain, Poland and Ireland. Manchester Airport, the main international gateway outside London, is 35 miles away and can be reached in under an hour by train. Flights from domestic, European and International locations land here and it can handle up to 20 million passengers a year.

Connections By Freight Ports

Although Sheffield is not on the coast, it lies almost halfway between the Humber and Liverpool ports, which provide ferry and freight services to Ireland, continental Europe, North America and beyond. Direct road links to Hull and Liverpool ensure that sea trade is an effective transport method for Sheffield companies.

The M18 connects Sheffield directly to the ports at Hull, the UK`s busiest port complex, and offers short sea trade links to Europe, Scandinavia and the Baltic.
