Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council has made substantial development a priority for its vision of the area, to ensure that we continue to thrive and grow.

Barnsley town centre is undergoing a period of change, and new projects include the new Barnsley Interchange, the second stage of the Gateway Plaza at Town End, The Markets complex and Experience Barnsley - a People's Museum and Archives Centre which has been awarded almost £3m of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Planned Developments

Goldthorpe Village Masterplan

Mixed Use Development

Goldthorpe Village Masterplan - funded by Yorkshire Forward and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, the masterplan proposes the relocation and renewal of the village primary school, provision of a new village centre square and market place, improvements to the village retail core, and housing renewal.

Young Peoples' Hub

Young People's Hub - this project will see the creation of a flexible space for young people in the Barnsley Dearne Valley area, young people that are perhaps disengaged from more traditional youth services. Consultation with young people will be key to its success.

Solar Powered Barnsley Football Club

Major Commercial

Barnsley Football Club will become the first in the UK to be solar powered.

Photovoltaic panels will be installed on the roofs of two stands, and the external wall of the south stand at Oakwell, which could power about 140 homes.

Electricity produced will be used in the ground, with any excess being fed back into the National Grid. The development will save the club an estimated 50% of its electricity bills every year – the equivalent of tens of thousands of pounds.

The project is cost over £1m and is being undertaken by Solar Europa Limited, based in Dodworth.

The panels on the south and east stands will produce approximately 0.5 MW of electricity, and installation costs will be footed by the company, which will make back selling electricity back to the National Grid via the Feed In Tariff.

Barnsley Town Centre Regeneration

Tourism & Leisure, Retail Development, Mixed Use Development, Major Commercial

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council has joined up with Yorkshire Forward, Ashcroft Estates, and Guildhouse to push forward the regeneration of the town.

Barnsley Town Centre will undergo a major retail development, significantly improving the town’s shopping and leisure offer. The site is located on Barnsley's prime Cheapside retail pitch, and has easily access to the transport interchange. The development will revolve around a large department store and multiplex cinema.

The development is due to begin in 2012, due for completion in 2015.
