Connections By Road

With excellent and uncongested motorways you can reach North Lincolnshire quickly and easily. The M180 connects directly to the M18, which offers onward links to the M62 Trans-Pennine route, the A1and M1 north-south routes. Collectively, these simple motorway links bring most of the UK’s major cities within a four-hour drive of the Humber Bridge – a distinct cost advantage for businesses in terms of ‘just in time’ lorry deliveries and hassle free driving for cars and motorbikes.

Connections By Rail

Our rail services provide local people and business travellers with fast and convenient links to the main north-south and east-west rail services. Local trains to Doncaster train station mean you can join onward connections that reach London in less than two hours.

The area’s comprehensive rail network also has a major role to play for freight forwarding to and from the region’s ports and Corus steelworks. A staggering 25 percent of national rail freight starts its life on the South Humber Gateway, which is the home of the South Humber ports.

Connections By Air

A valued asset to both business and to holiday travellers is Humberside Airport in North Lincolnshire. It is among the fastest growing airports in the country and is the base for the UK’s second largest heliport.  Scheduled services to Amsterdam allow passengers to reach 400 destinations worldwide. A daily service to Aberdeen reflects the region's strong offshore connections, and charter flights operate to a range of holiday destinations.

Humberside Airport is home to the Perishables Hub, which provides airside cold storage to allow businesses to fly perishable goods direct to the airport and store them immediately before onward transportation.

Connections By Freight Ports

North Lincolnshire is located on the banks of the Humber Estuary. We provide a home to the port of Killingholme and numerous wharves along the Rivers Trent. Along with the ports of Grimsby and Immingham, the port of Killingholme forms the UK's busiest trading estuary by volume of cargo handled. The South Humber ports, as they are collectively known, are also home to the Humber Sea Terminal.

The South Humber Ports are key nodes on the North European Trade Axis, able to reach a potential UK market of 40 million customers, and a potential European market of 500 million customers. The ports and wharves in and around North Lincolnshire are sited within 18-24 hours streaming time to the European ports, and benefit from excellent and uncongested access to the UK motorway network.

Ports in North Lincolnshire along the Rivers Trent and Humber provide a wide range of services at highly competitive costs. The facilities vary in size and location, from the mouth of the Humber Estuary to 77 km inland, offering accommodation to suit almost any business.

Ports and wharves in North Lincolnshire:

The Port Freight Statistics September 2011, published by the Department of Transport, reports that the Humber region's ports of Grimsby and Immingham remained the UK's leading port in 2010, handling 54 Mt (11% of UK traffic).

See Publications for the full report.

Work is underway to develop broadband in North Lincolnshire. A key project will extend existing BT network; combination of fibre to the curb and fibre to the premises (FTTC and FFTP) to cover 90% of the exchange areas, particularly across the South Humber Gateway central project area. The remaining 10% ‘hard-to-reach’ areas could be covered by WiMAX/WiFi combinations.
