Newport City Council - Universities & Research
Newport is a university city. The University of Wales Newport has 8,000 full and part-time students on two campuses, offering around one hundred different courses of degree, professional qualification and HND standard. The new £35m city centre campus housing the School of Art, Media and Design was completed for occupation in 2011.
The University also has academic schools for Business, Education, Health and Social Sciences, Centre for Community and Life Long Learning, Newport School of Golf, and a Centre of Excellence in Learning and Teaching.
The combined output of first degree graduates from the six universities within 30 miles of Newport is over 17,000.
There are nearby universities at Cardiff, Treforest (Glamorgan), Swansea and Bristol, covering all the main specialisms, including medicine and law.
Coleg Gwent, the largest further education college in Wales, has a campus in Newport.
