Connections By Road
The UK has a comprehensive motorway network of modern and safe roads that provide easy access to all major centres. The strategic road network consists of motorways and major trunk roads; other roads are managed by local authorities.
In England, the strategic road network is managed by the Highways agency and carries a third of all standard traffic in England and two thirds of all heavy freight traffic. More information on England's road network, including real-time traffic information is available at the Highways Agency website
In Scotland, the strategic road network is managed by Transport Scotland and more information can be found on their website
In Wales, the Transport Directorate of the Welsh Assembly takes responsibility for motorways and all purpose trunk roads. The Directorate works closely with local government and other bodies and delivers the trunk road programme of improvement and maintenance through consultants and agent local authorities. In Northern Ireland, all roads are the responsibility of Roads Service, an Executive Agency of the Department for Regional Development. Click here to view their website here
