University of Exeter has 17% of its research rated as world-leading and 89% of international standing. It has developed interdisciplinary research themes, some of which are set out below:

  • Climate Change and Sustainable Futures - The research focus includes predicting climate change, assessing its effects on ecosystems and human and animal health, and developing the technology for mitigating its effects. Moreover, the Met Office Hadley Centre in Exeter, is the UK's leading climate change research centre, providing world-class guidance and advising the Government on climate change issues.
  • Functional Materials - Brings together knowledge to engineer innovative new materials. A particular research focus includes twenty scientists within the School of Physics working on developing new photonic materials.
  • Systems Biology - The overall aim of this interdisciplinary research is to help predict the response of biological systems to environmental change; current research includes a significant advance in tackling a fungus that is the world`s biggest destroyer of rice crops and also kills patients that have damaged immune systems.
  • Translational medicine, personalised healthcare and public health - also linked to the Peninsula Medical School for Medicine and Dentistry. Interdisciplinary research activity is funded by a range of organisations, including the Medical Research Council, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Wellcome Trust. The research focus includes clinical and translational research in diabetes, mood disorders and interventions to achieve behavioural change for health.

In terms of day to day business support, the University has a strong focus on providing advice, support and a range of facilities for SMEs and national and international companies, ranging from incubation, modelling, testing, simulation, graduate placements and bespoke research.
