Tourism & leisure
Key Reasons:
Devon has a significant tourism cluster. The county`s high-quality natural environment is a key motivation for tourists to visit the county. It has the largest proportion [26%] and number of full time equivalent jobs [59,438] related to tourism in the South West. Tourism supports 13% of the county`s work force, employing people both directly and within other sectors such as retail and transport.
The sector has a particularly high degree of importance in some parts of Devon, such as North Devon and East Devon, where employment in the sector rises to 18% and 17% respectively, and is especially important to the Unitary authority area of Torbay. Tourism firms are widely spread across the county but with a definite coastal focus. North Devon tends to have a preponderance of firms in tourism. Exeter has the weakest cluster.
Leisure visitors, both staying and day visitors, represent a significant number of Devon`s tourists, with high season being June to September. The majority of the market is domestic visitors. However, visitors from overseas, although small, are an increasing market. The largest proportion of tourism expenditure is on food and drink, highlighting the links between this and the food and drink cluster.
