Key Reasons:
Marine Technology in the UK...
Devon is one of the leading centres for the marine industry in the UK, with the largest marine sector workforce in South West England.
Devon is an obvious choice of location for relocating a maritime business, thanks to its two coastlines, many ports, harbours and marinas, boat and shipbuilding companies, naval and marine bases and highly diversified supply chain. The marine renewable energy sector is developing at a rapid pace, and will be further boosted by the planned 1.5GW offshore Atlantic Array wind farm.
The South West Regional Economic Strategy identified the marine sector as a priority, with Devon accounting for 60% of all marine-based jobs in the region. Traditionally, the South West has been strong in boat and shipbuilding and repairs. In Devon, the highest concentration is in Plymouth.
South Hams, East Devon and Teignbridge have a strong cluster of firms in the sector, with a particular concentration of offshore and oil-based firms in Teignbridge and North Devon. Marine based activity is also clustered in Northam, Appledore and Braunton.
Institutions in Devon significant to the Marine Industry:
- Britannia Royal Naval College,Dartmouth
- The Plymouth Marine Skills Centre
- Plymouth Marine Laboratories
- The Peninsula Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMaRE)
Additionally, many of the county's higher education establishments offer qualifications and apprenticeships relating to the marine sector, and Plymouth and Exeter Universities have centres of excellence in marine renewable energy.
PRIMaRE also supports Wave Hub, the South West's £42 million development centre for testing of wave energy devices.
Employment in Devon's marine sector grew by 24% between 2008 and 2009 alone, and output in the sector for the same period increased by 25%. (Estimates from the South West Regional Accounts.)
