West Berkshire is predominantly rural, covering over 50% of the geographical area of Berkshire county. The District is part of the Thames Valley Sub Region, sometimes known as the 'engine room of the UK economy'. Thames Valley is ranked 7th in Europe for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita.
West Berkshire enjoys excellent transport links to London and to the West via primary and trunk roads, the M4 motorway and mainline railways. The District also hosts several world-renowned firms. The District has a strong industrial base, but is rapidly becoming recognised for knowledge-based and new technology industries, which, combined with strong service sector and numerous manufacturing and distribution companies, make West Berkshire's economy strong and with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the UK.
