Scottish Development International (SDI) - Infrastructure
Connections By Road
Scotland's compact size and strong road networks means our major cities are easily accessible. For example, Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland’s two main cities, are linked by the M8 motorway with journey times of less than an hour.
The UK's motorway infrastructure means Scotland is also well connected across the UK with the M74 motorway meaning journey times of four hours between Glasgow and Manchester.
Scotland’s strengths...
Connections By Rail
Scotland is well served by a strong railway network, serving commuters to its major cities, as well as offering excellent rail links with major cities and regions across the UK.
Direct trains from London Euston to Glasgow Central Station takes just 4 hours 8 minutes, and a direct train from Edinburgh to London King's Cross takes just 4 hours 25 minutes. Between 8 and 12 trains run between Glasgow and Edinburgh every hour, with a journey time of approximately 50 minutes. From Glasgow, Manchester is just an hour's train journey, and from Edinburgh, Newcastle can be reached in 90 minutes.
Connections By Air
Scotland's six major airports offer regular, convenient links to London, the rest of the UK and across the globe. Business travel and air freight is convenient and cost effective.
Scotland's Airports:
- Edinburgh Airport (7 miles from the city centre)
- Glasgow Airport (8 miles from the city centre)
- Prestwick Airport (30 miles south of Glasgow)
- Aberdeen Airport (7 miles from city centre)
- Inverness Airport (8 miles from Inverness)
- Dundee Airport - providing 4 daily flights to/3 daily flights from London City, (100 minutes), and 2 daily flights to and from Birmingham, (80 minutes)
Connections By Freight Ports
Scotland offers a variety of ports of different sizes and capacities, allowing your business to choose the location that best meets your needs.
Over 70 freight ports across Scotland make it easy to export and import to mainland Europe, Ireland, Scandinavia and North America. No matter where you are in Scotland, you are never more than a 2.5-hour drive from a freight port.
The Ports of Forth are operated by Forth Ports Limited - one of the UK’s largest port operators. Grangemouth, situated at the head of the Firth of Forth in Central Scotland, is the biggest container port in the country. Other important freight ports include the Port of Inverness, Burntisland, Leith, Rosyth, Methil, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Dundee, Flotta, and Stornoway.
