The Scottish Borders is a sparsely populated rural area with a strong base of primary production – including a wide variety of agricultural produce, a significant forestry industry and an important local fishing fleet.

The Scottish Rural Development Plan is a new grant fund which assists with the above and aims to deliver environmenta, social and economic benefits to Scotland, and the Council aims to support the development of small and medium sized enterprises by working in partnership with a variety of bodies and continually developing business incentives.
