Glasgow is set to become the location of the world’s first floating leisure village. With the gradual decline of the maritime industry, the regeneration of the docklands area is set to focus more on tourism, leisure and the creative arts, in future, over more traditional industries. The £30 million development will house a marina, restaurants, a rooftop concert space and retail facilities.
The biggest city in Scotland, Glasgow has seen £3.5bn spent or committed on projects in the Clyde Waterfront region, and the floating leisure village is just one of these. Funded by Scottish Enterprise, Floating Concepts Limited is undertaking the development, which will see the Clyde Waterfront area transformed into an international tourist destination for the novelty of the architecture as well as the leisure and entertainment facilities.
Tourism is not the only industry set to benefit, however, Floating Concepts specialise in property developments on water, and plan to create a new canal with a floating street. Two and three storey office buildings, studio flats and townhouses will revitalise the local community, with over 200 berths for residents and visitors helping to transform the water into an environmentally friendly route for travel.
The dockland is already home to much of Glasgow’s creative industry; BBC Scotland and STV have major presences in the area, with high tech broadcasting centres catering to the needs of Scotland’s media. Since 2007, BBC Scotland has been headquartered at the 34,000 m sq broadcast centre on the Pacific Quay. Their presence is partially credited with the arrival of 50 creative SMEs across Clyde Waterfront.
"All great coastal cities have a prime waterfront destination and now Glasgow has the chance to join those ranks," said David Beard, Chief Executive of Floating Concepts. "The iconic nature of a floating village will turn the Canting Basin into a major attraction quite unlike any other in the world, as well as being a dynamic centre for local people and businesses."
This property development comes alongside 9,000 new homes on 320,000 m sq, which has been built along the Clyde since 2003. To date, the projects have provided over 20,000 new jobs, and the regeneration project continues to gather more investors yearly.
