The Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) - Universities & Research
Five top-class universities in the wider Liverpool City Region educate 80,000 students. There are strong connections between our universities and the business community, with an emphasis on knowledge transfer, training and research.
The University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University have established many specialist schools, including:
- The National Zoonosis Centre - the world's first interdisciplinary centre devoted to the study of animal-borne diseases such as avian flu, BSE and SARS.
- The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine - the world's first medical institution dedicated to the teaching and study of tropical diseases. It is at the forefront of research into the control of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, and continues to further develop its capabilities following funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
- AIMES (Advanced Internet Methods and Emergent Systems) - focuses on advanced internet technologies, particularly grid computing.
- Art and Design Academy - is at the leading edge of teaching, research and knowledge transfer in art and design and will incorporate the Liverpool Screen School.
Outside the universities, specialist centres include:
- The £34million National Biomanufacturing Centre (NBC) - as an international biopharmaceutical design centre, its aim is to provide the resources and knowledge for life science companies and academic groups to bridge the gap between laboratory science and early stage clinical trials.
- Liverpool Innovation Park (LIP) - focuses on the ICT, digital and creative, and healthcare industries, as a regional centre of excellence.
- Liverpool Science Park - situated in the striking environs of Liverpool's metropolitan cathedral, the aim of the Liverpool Science Park is to provide a home for developing science and knowledge based companies, by offering accommodation and business support.
- The Daresbury Innovation Centre - situated at the heart of the Daresbury Science & Innovation Campus. Having rapidly become a magnet for world class science and innovation, this stunningly designed building provides a superb location for hi tech SMEs and forms the focal point of the powerful Daresbury SIC network. The Hartree Centre will be a new world leading computational sciences centre for the UK, following a £50million investment at the Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus.
