Housing

The rapid growth of city-centre living is reflected in Liverpool's massive choice of stylish riverside apartments, including landmark locations such as Beetham Tower, 20 Chapel Street and One Park West, the landmark building in the 42 acre redevelopment of Liverpool One. Many are within walking distance of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular waterside locations such the Albert Dock. 

Magnificent Georgian and Victorian architecture epitomise Liverpool's Hope Street Quarter, crowned by two landmark cathedrals.

Education

Schools across the Region are gathering a national reputation, performing consistently well in league tables. 42 schools and 29 early years/daycare providers across Merseyside and Cheshire were classed as "outstanding" in the annual report of Her Majesty's Chief Inspectors of Schools (November 2006).

The five universities in the wider Liverpool City Region teach more than 80,000 students and award around 15,000 degrees every year. 

In 2007, 59.8% of Merseyside Students gained 5 or more GCSEs at Grade A*-C, putting Merseyside ahead of all its metropolitan comparators.

Liverpool Community College is one of the largest Further Education (FE) colleges in England, offering 500 academic and vocational courses. It is joined by other FE institutions such as St Helens College and Southport College.
Stars of tomorrow can hone their craft at Europe's premier fame academy, Sir Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA).

Culture

Steeped in history with a rich cultural heritage, Liverpool City Region is a thriving, stylish, cosmopolitan and vibrant city break destination. Renowned for its strong maritime history, and passion for music, the arts, culture and sport, it's no wonder the city revelled in its status as European Capital of Culture 2008.

Liverpool is home to: 

  • The largest group of museums and art galleries outside London. Among them, the internationally recognised Tate Liverpool, the Walker Art Gallery and Merseyside Maritime Museum. 
  • The Albert Dock - England's largest group of Grade 1 listed buildings.
  • Britain's largest Anglican cathedral. 
  • St Georges Hall - one of finest neoclassical buildings in Europe.
  • The acclaimed Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and numerous theatres and concert venues, including the Liverpool Empire - the largest two-tier theatre in the UK.

Recreational Activities

The region`s 135km coastline incorporates publicly accessible woodlands, nature reserves and promenades, as well as 60km of beach - more than any other urban area in Britain and with 90% of it regarded as internationally important for nature conservation, with wading birds and rare species.

Our reputation as part of England`s Golf Coast is growing fast. Home to 19 challenging and picturesque courses it includes three Royal Links courses.

Aintree Racecourse is the home of the John Smiths Grand National - the world's most famous steeplechase - and has recently undergone a £30m redevelopment. 

Liverpool City Region is also home to two Premiership football clubs - Liverpool FC and Everton FC.

Part of the 12 mile Wirral Way has recently been upgraded for walking, cycling and horse riding, taking visitors through England`s first ever Country Park and offering spectacular views across the Dee Estuary and the Welsh hills. 

Alternative Energy / Environmental Issues

Estimates for 2006 suggest the Liverpool City Region generated 11,199 Kilo-tonnes of carbon emissions. This represented 2.1% of the UK total and was one for the lowest levels per person of any metropolitan area.

Waste Recycling

Some 32% of Liverpool City Region`s municipal waste was recycled in 2007/08, including 29% of household waste. This is a 7% improvement on the previous year.

Commuting

One of the Liverpool City Region`s strengths is its transport network. Outside London, the area has the highest level of travel to work by public transport, with 11% using bus or coach and 6% rail. The national figures are 8% and 5% respectively.

Other

Retail & Leisure

A luxury shopping mall, the Metquarter, opened its doors in Liverpool city-centre in 2006. The 147,000 sq ft site comprises 45 retail units, with labels including Armani Exchange, Kurt Geiger, Gieves & Hawkes, Flannels and Hobbs.

The Duke of Westminster's property arm, Grosvenor, has invested £1billion in the Liverpool ONE retail development - the biggest retail-led city centre regeneration project in Europe. It comprises 160 units totalling 1.65 million sq ft of retail space.

Liverpool alone has more than 250 bars and clubs, ranging from world-renowned haunts such as Mathew Street (home of the Cavern Club), to the designer-chic lounge bars of The Albert Dock, and traditional public houses reflecting the Liverpool's unique heritage and character. 

The best of British cuisine is exemplified by award-winning restaurants such as Simply Heathcotes, the London Carriage Works, 60 Hope Street and more recently our first Michelin Star restaurant, Fraîche.
