Case Studies for Halton Borough Council
BioEDEN
BioEDEN are an international biotech business operating across the UK, United States, Mexico, Panama and Columbia. BioEDEN collect and store stem cells from children’s milk teeth after they have naturally been replaced – a technique which has several advantages over other methods, due to its non-invasive nature. The business was one of the first to take advantage of the easy-access laboratory facility available at Daresbury SIC – the Innovation Technology Access Centre or I-TAC.
Stem cells are a vital part of the healing process in the body. BioEDEN work with Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) which aid tissue restoration (skin, bones, muscles and ligaments). MSCs are pluripotent, which means that they can become any tissue. This opens up potential future developments in heart attack treatment, Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
Collaboration with Campus partners at Daresbury SIC has helped BioEDEN with a number of challenges including raising investment capital, recruiting board members and building a network of contacts. The proximity to Campus stakeholder the University of Liverpool’s National Tissue Research Centre has also been helpful.
Jim Curtis, MD of BioEden said: “We’ve got purpose built facilities…we’ve got the Daresbury management team who are hugely helpful in the way we set up and try to run the business with lots of advice and input which is bias-free…a lot of people come to us, and in any start-up company, time is precious.”
Tesco
"The overall service has been of a high standard and it has been a fantastic benefit to Tesco in terms of a smooth opening of the new Widnes site. Through this partnership arrangement, we have been able to recruit 75% of the workforce from the local area.
All Halton Employment Partnership staff that have helped and supported have been very professional and all the work has been to a very high standard.
I would recommend the support of the Halton Employment Partnership to other businesses"
Niki Wyeth, Tesco HR Project Manager
