East Manchester - Development Projects
In east Manchester, our ambition is to:
- Further develop east Manchester as a major investment location, with a key role to play in the development of a competitive City Region;
- Continue to renew the physical landscape to support further investment, through world class public realm, iconic buildings and excellent transport;
- Be one of the premier destinations for new investment and leisure visitors in the North West;
- Increase employment, the quality of employment and the proportion of local people taking up local jobs;
- Significantly improve skill levels, ensuring that the local community is equipped to take advantage of increasing employment opportunities within the area and in other parts of Greater Manchester;
- Support a thriving micro and small business base, that offers good wages and quality employment.
Planned Developments
Alan Turing Way
Mixed Use DevelopmentThe Alan Turing Way Arc of Employment will be anchored by sites of large-scale significance that take advantage of the quality image and accessibility of Alan Turing Way.
Rather than becoming the focus of sector-specific activity, the role of the corridor will be to provide a coordinating structure for a range of quality employment-generating uses and economic development activity, from manufacturing to research, technology, major recreation, service and office uses.
As the primary north-south route through east Manchester, the role of Alan Turing Way will be to improve inter-radial connectivity, support a diversity of industry and attract new investment.
Central Park
Major Commercial
Central Park is undoubtedly the most significant opportunity for business development and employment within east Manchester and is at the core of plans to grow the area`s modern economy. The park will ultimately provide 1.4 million sq ft of business space and create up to 10,000 new jobs.
The site is also home to One Central Park, a unique £19 million project, housing a number of education providers including Manchester and Salford Universities. The site is also home to the newly established Peter Jones of 'Dragons Den' inspired National Enterprise Academy, providing training for the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Metrolink
Public Transport Link
A transport revolution is coming to east Manchester, with major construction work well underway on a new multimillion-pound Metrolink service.
Work on the east Manchester line began earlier this year and will allow trams to run from the City Centre through to Sportcity and then to Clayton before heading to Droylsden and Ashton-under-Lyne.
Further connections will also be available with the Oldham to Rochdale line, which will enable passengers to travel to Central Park in Newton Heath from spring 2011.
The extension of the Manchester Metrolink network will substantially improve public transport services, and the overall connectivity of east Manchester.
Ancoats
Mixed Use Development
Known as the world's first industrial suburb, and with one of Manchester's largest concentrations of Grade II and Grade II* listed buildings, Ancoats is a significant part of the redevelopment of east Manchester and is one of the most up-and-coming addresses in the North West.
Around £370 million of public and private sector investment is helping to revitalise the area and by 2011, eight hectares of once derelict or underused land will have been transformed into 50,000 square metres of business space, thousands of high spec houses and apartments, and exciting new public space with 3,000 residents and 1,800 workers.
Great Ancoats Street
Mixed Use Development
A secondary Arc of Employment will be promoted along Great Ancoats Street, where east Manchester meets the City Centre.
This established corridor has the potential to support higher-density development and already has a significant amount of available space available for use.
The Great Ancoats Street Arc will support a mix of employment uses, generally containing more retail and service activity than those that will be provided along Alan Turing Way.
It will establish a seamless integration of east Manchester neighbourhoods and the City Centre.
Sport City
Mixed Use Development
Sportcity - The future is here.
The national sports, leisure and entertainment destination, which includes Manchester City Football Club stadium, boasts the largest concentration of sporting venues in Europe, situated two miles from the City Centre.
More than 400 sport and leisure events are held within the Sportcity grounds annually, attracting 4.5 million visits. This will increase with the development of a new £24m National Indoor BMX Centre, significantly contributing to the future of the destination as a high-profile sports and leisure attraction.
The park`s potential is further enhanced by new transport infrastructure, which incorporates a £36 million transport gateway.
The Sharp Project
The Sharp Project, a new £15m digital media production complex will bring together and nurture small and medium businesses as well as national and international production companies that focus on animation, CGI and visual effects by creating worldwide networking between tenants.
At its centre is the former Sharp warehouse, which is strategically located adjacent to Central Park and next door to the Metrolink station. The existing 200,000 square foot complex is being converted into a new centre for digital content production and the first phase of tenants are getting ready to move in, including CGI specialists Red Vision.
