West Lakes Renaissance - Development Projects
West Cumbria has seen numerous onshore wind developments, predominantly in the Workington area. Eon is developing the Robin Rigg off shore windfarm, which is planned to be one of the biggest in Europe, generating enough energy to power 12,000 homes.
Furness has become a key player in the energy industry with the 30-turbine Bowind wind farm 4 miles off Walney Island becoming the first off-shore wind farm in Cumbria. The £1.2 billion two-phase Walney Wind Farm has planning permission to have 102 turbines spinning, which is projected to be completed by 2012. Another major scheme in the area is Morecambe Wind, which will have 150 turbines constructed west of Duddon Sands.
Furness is home to firms specialising in natural gas and oil, and can accommodate businesses with reserves and space for storage in and around the northern areas of Morecambe Bay.
