Invest in Cumbria - Development Plans
The Cumbria Economic Strategy & Sub Regional Action Plan was produced in 2008 on behalf of several partners, including Invest in Cumbria.
Several future plans are in the pipeline for small and medium sized development opportunities in and around the Cumbrian population centres.
Planned Developments
Westlakes Science and Technology Park
University/Science/Research
Situated on the fringe of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, Westlakes Science & Technology Park provides a high-quality working environment and, through its partners, is able to offer comprehensive business support to organisations seeking new accommodation.
The University of Central Lancashire has a campus on the Science Park where it is offering various courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development levels in nuclear science and technology, business leadership and management, governance, policy and decision making and for allied health professionals.
Manchester University is planning a £20 million facility by 2012, focussing on radiation sciences and decommissioning engineering.
Kingmoor Business Park
Major Commercial
Following Britain’s Energy Coast initiative, plans for the expansion of Westlakes Science & Technology Park, Whitehaven, and Lillyhall Business Park, Workington, have been put forward.
Planning permission for the expansion of Kingmoor Business Park, Carlisle, has recently been secured.
Carlisle Northern Development Route & The Hub
Road Infrastructure, Mixed Use Development
The CNDR is a new arterial road currently under construction that goes through the centre of Kingmoor Park and links to the M6. The road is also the catalyst for a major multi-million pound development at Kingmoor Park.
Tony Goddard, Chief Executive of Kingmoor Park, said about “The Hub”:
“The flagship of the project is a 130 bed, four-star hotel with conference facilities, a fitness centre, restaurants, bars, and 100,000 sq ft of offices.”
Upon completion, The Hub will create more than 1,500 on-site jobs. Proposals have also been approved for a hotel and leisure facilities.
The Waterfront Barrow-in-Furness Business Park
Major Commercial
The Waterfront Barrow in Furness Business Park – a development previously led by Barrow Regeneration (West Lakes Renaissance URC) is based on council-owned land and was initially set to free up 60 acres of land by raising land levels, constructing access roads, instaling broadband ducting, and marketing the site.
Further plans were approved to construct bases for wind farm operators such as Vattenfall, Dong Energy and Scottish Power Renewables.
Cost of land is about £100,000 per acre, upon which property developers or individual companies can conduct their own projects.
