Teesside University is one of the UK's fastest-growing universities, home to 29,000 students. Numbers have grown 65% in ten years, and the University is expanding to meet an expected 20% rise by 2020. Teesside has an excellent record of employer engagement, with local companies working successfully with the University. It was awarded the largest government grant of any university to work with industry, and has a number of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships with local businesses.
In 2009, it was awarded Business Incubator of the year, and University of the year by the Times Higher Education Awards, the first modern university to do so. Teesside focuses upon the creative industries, engineering, management, and courses serving the logistics, offshore and chemical industries. Specialist research institutes include digital and design.
Durham University - in the UK's top 5 universities for research and academic achievement - has a base in Stockton. Queen's Campus has seen over £40m of investment since 1992, and plans to expand from 2,000 to 5,000 students by 2020. Locally, the University has strengths in health, medicine, education and business. The highly regarded Wolfson Research Institute, a major facility which has worked with the NHS on public health issues, is based here.
