Our vision is for a diverse, knowledge-based economy characterised by the growth of more science and technology businesses.

We will develop our existing economic assets in sectors that the County already has some highly competitive businesses in, including our manufacturing and engineering base. We will also concentrate on areas where employment growth is forecast, including retailing and leisure/tourism, as well as logistics, with County Durham's significant locational advantages.

We will achieve competitiveness and productivity in our business by:

• Addressing factors that enhance productivity in business: workforce skills, capital investment, innovation
• Broadening access to high-standard business support
• Increasing export activity and sustaining manufacturing exports through partnerships with One NorthEast and other organisations
• Encouraging investment in workforce skills by widening access to Train-to-Gain, and other skills-improvement programmes

The GREAT Institute

The GREAT Institute is to become a National centre for renewable energy research, education, and training.

Eastgate Renewable Energy Village

Eastgate Renewable Energy Village will use renewable energy to support the regeneration of Weardale.
