Grant for Research and Development (GRD)
SMEs in the UK may apply for assistance from the Technology Strategy Board Grant for Research and Development. These grants are available across the areas of science, technology and engineering. There are three types of grants which may be obtained.
- Proof of Market – funding in order to support market research, testing, competitor analysis and intellectual property issues.
- Proof of Concept – Funding for feasibility studies, prototyping, testing, protection of intellectual property and production techniques.
- Development of Prototype – Production of demonstration models, protection of intellectual property and trials/testing required.

Loans
The Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme.
The Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme is a government-backed programme that aims to support 6,000 SMEs across the UK in the next four years. It is open to companies that have a gross turnover of £25m, and loans are available from £1,000 to £1,000,000 and are repayable over ten years.
