Biotechnology

Key Reasons:

UK biotechnology: Cambridge is the home of the largest biotechnology cluster in Europe...

Expertise and resources at the University of Cambridge's Institute of Biotechnology are second to none in Europe. The One Nucleus biotechnology cluster incorporates the university and several research centres in Cambridge. The cluster merged with the London Biotechnology Network (LBN) in 2010 to become a 'super-cluster'.

The merger of Cambridge's National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) and The Arable Group (TAG) in Norfolk sets Cambridge up to house the country's largest independent crop research and information centre.

The charitable group now has the resources needed to support the development of improved crop varieties and inputs, to evaluate their performance and - through applied agronomy research and farmer communication - to ensure the benefits are transferred effectively into practical agriculture.

It will be headquartered at NIAB in Cambridge but retain a network of regional offices, with around 200 staff in total - 150 from NIAB, 50 from TAG. Combined turnover will be more than £12m from a range of funding sources including membership subscriptions, levy boards, Government, research councils and private sector contracts.

For information about the UK biotechnology research climate, see the Biology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) website.
