Key Competitive Attractions

The area of South Holland in the South of Lincolnshire, covers an area of some 74,000 hectares and has many economic links across Lincolnshire and regional boundaries into Rutland, Nottinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. In particular, there are direct links to the City of Peterborough, including a brand new road, the A16, connecting Spalding to Peterborough, and due to open in Summer 2010.

The A16, A17 and A52 are major routes through the district, providing easy access to the A1 North and South, East Anglia and the Midlands.

London is just 55 minutes away by train from Peterborough: there is a regular train service from Spalding to connect with the London service, and the airports of Stansted, Luton, East Midlands and Birmingham are all less than two hours away.
There is also a thriving port to the East of the district at Sutton Bridge.

There are a number of allocated employment sites across the district, and the Council`s Economic Development Team work closely with local agents to monitor take up, and to work with planning and policy control colleagues to identify future potential allocations.

Assistance and Support For New Business Investors

South Holland District Council has a proactive Economic Development Team who can work with any potential inward investors in conjunction with colleagues from the County Council and the Regional Development Agency, to ensure that any available support is maximised.

They also work very closely with Business Link East Midlands, who have one full-time and one part-time advisor dedicated to businesses in South Holland.

Close contact is also maintained with local commercial land and property agents, to ensure that locational enquiries are dealt with quickly and efficiently.

Existing Business Base

South Holland`s thriving economy has grown up around its traditional agricultural industry, and has developed in recent years into a large food manufacturing and distribution sector that sees 20% of the nation\'s food pass through the district each year.

Many peripheral businesses have grown up around this core sector, including packaging and labelling companies, mechanical and electrical engineering companies, and support businesses for the logistics sector.

The traditional business to business sector is well-established, and over the past 10 years, two gas-fired power stations have been built, with 2 more currently awaiting planning permission.
