Charnwood Business - Development Plans
Charnwood has recently published a new Economic Strategy that sets out ambitious aspirations for the future (a link to our strategy will be added to this listing shortly). This proposes major growth in local employment. Charnwood currently has a skilled labour force, sufficient not only for its own needs but also large enough to serve the net needs of a city the size of Derby. It is currently the largest net exporter of skilled labour in the East Midlands. Its aim is to retain more of its skilled workforce by provision of new high quality employment sites. A key part of this will be the development of the University Science Park.
Whilst advanced manufacturing and research and development are key strengths of the area, especially around Loughborough, Charnwood`s ambition is for a broad, balanced economy.
Major new employment land allocations are expected in both North (near Loughborough) and South Charnwood (near Leicester), as part of the LDF (Local Development Framework) Core Strategy.
In addition, new business starter accommodation is planned across the Borough.
Planned Developments
University Science park development
University/Science/ResearchDevelopment of the University Science Park
The Science Park occupies a prime site adjacent to the Univeristy and close to J23 of the M1 and East Midlands Airport.
Phase 1 (complete) comprises the former British Gas Research and Technology Centre, now owned by the University. Phase 2 will add another 50 hectares to this. It is already home to SportPark, the new administrative centre for various UK sports bodies. (read the development prospectus and Planning Development Plan Document)
