Tax Issues

In the UK, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (“HMRC”) is responsible for collecting taxes. HMRC is a fairly new institution formed from the merger of The Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise.

The main sources of tax in the UK are corporation tax, income tax, national insurance contributions and value added tax (VAT). Individuals may also have to pay capital gains tax on sales or gifts of assets and inheritance tax on certain lifetime gifts and on the value of their estates on death.

UK tax legislation is complex and this is no more than a general guide. Specialist advice should always be sought. In addition, the information in this document is stated based on the rules as at 6 April 2010 for individuals and 1 April 2010 for limited companies (the start of the UK tax financial year for those persons respectively).
