Tigris Development Agency
Key Competitive Attractions
Tigris Development Agency covers the provinces of Mardin, Siirt, Batman and Sirnak. The region is known as the fertile crescent of Turkey and, as part of northern Mesopotamia, is home to some of the oldest human settlements in the world. The region is a potential gateway to the Middle East, with close proximity to the borders of Syria, Iraq and Iran.
The four provinces benefit from the Southeastern Anatolia Project, which entails state sponsored investment programmes in the fields of agriculture, industry, infrastructure and education.
The economy of the region is based largely on agriculture and animal husbandry. In the case of the province of Batman, the economy is dominated by oil extraction. Natural gas is extracted in Mardin and the province has the largest phosphate reserves in Turkey. Limestone is also quarried in Mardin. In addition, Sirnak has rich coal, asphaltite and clay deposits and copper is extracted in Siirt.
In addition to oil, Batman produces beverages, processed food, chemicals, furniture, footwear, machinery and transport equipment. In Mardin, there are investment opportunities in viniculture, filigree silver embroidery, tourism and wind energy.
The region as a whole offers considerable investment opportunities in renewable energy (solar, wind and geothermal) and tourism.
