Diyarbakir is the second largest city in the region and one of the world’s oldest human settlements. The city is situated on the banks of the Tigris River and is famous in particular for its watermelons. The economy is based on agriculture and stockbreeding. Other business sectors include tourism, oil drilling and mining (mainly copper and lignite).
The city is home to Dicle Technocity, which aims to attract national and international companies in fields of high technology, particularly related to farming and biotechnology, medical and aromatic cultivation, renewable energy sources, information technology, food technologies and mining.
Since the early 1990s, Sanliurfa has benefited from the Southeastern Anatolia Project in order to improve irrigation. This has led to an agricultural boom, especially in production of the organic cotton. Other export items include wool and butter.
