The Northeast Anatolia Development Agency covers the provinces of Erzurum, Erzincan and Bayburt.
The economy of the three provinces is based primarily on agriculture and animal husbandry. The most urban of the three, Erzurum has various industries including food processing and furniture production. Marble is also quarried in Erzurum. The city is considered the economic capital of Eastern Turkey. It has a population of 775,000 and is one of Turkey’s 16 metropolitan municipalities. In addition, Erzurum is the 4th largest province in the country. Ski resorts are the main drivers of tourist traffic to the province of Erzurum.
Erzincan is often referred to as the gate to Southern Turkey. The city has served as a commercial centre since the days of the Silk Road. It is known in particular for its handcrafted copper wares. Bayburt, on the other hand, is largely a rural province. It has considerable potential as a tourist destination.
