Euphrates Development Agency covers the provinces of Elazig, Malatya, Tunceli and Bingol. The region is highly mountainous and the source of the famous river Euphrates. Across the four provinces, the two most important business sectors are food production and textiles.
Elazig is home to the hydroelectric Keban Dam, which since construction in the 1970’s has helped to turn the provincial capital into a regional industrial hub. The province is rich in minerals (mainly chrome) and has deposits of coal and petroleum. Prominent business sectors include mining and quarrying, food production and beverages, textiles and leather. Manufactures specialise in medical instruments, precision instruments, office supplies, furniture, paper and metal products. For agriculture, the main activities involve crops, cattle breeding, trout farming and wine making.
Malatya is the biggest city in the region and an exporting hub for the food and textile industries. The province has considerable potential in the fields of mineral mining and renewable energy. It is also famous for apricots.
Tunceli has a strong sector in food products and beverages. Other industries include fabricated metal products.
Bingol is an important centre for geothermal energy and a popular tourist destination. Honey production is one of the primary agricultural activities.
