The Eastern Anatolian Development Agency covers the provinces of Bitlis, Hakkari, Mus and Van.
The economy is based on agriculture (mainly grain, fruit and vegetables) and animal husbandry. Industry is fairly limited, but there are small-scale enterprises involved in food processing, timber, leather, tobacco, cement, bricks and cloth weaving. Mus province sits on mineral deposits and stone suitable for construction: barite, salt, lignite, gypsum, cement, limestone and sand stone. The region has a large Kurdish population.
The aim of the Eastern Anatolian Development Agency is turn the region into a centre for tourism and international trade. Key to the process will be the opening of the borders with Armenia.
Assistance and Support For New Business Investors
The Eastern Anatolian Development Agency implements development strategies in cooperation with the public and private sectors and non-governmental organisations. It also has an SME Financial Assistance Programme. The Maximum amount of grants is 50% of the total cost of the project.
