The East Marmara region is composed of five provinces; Kocaeli, Sakarya, Duzce, Yalova and Bolu. The region is situated at the heart of Turkish infrastructure: Sakarya is located on the Ankara-Istanbul highway with rail links to Istanbul. Duzce is located on the black Sea, Yalova on the Sea of Marmara and Bolu is linked to Istanbul and Ankara by a new motorway, which travels underneath Mount Bolu. Kocaeli is the base for the Turkish navy
The economy of the region is highly varied, with primary industries including tourism, agriculture and mining (including the majority of Turkey’s nuclear fuel manufacturing industry). Manufacturing ranges from heavy industrial machinery to paper products and chemical production.
