Mevlana is composed of two provinces, Konya and Karaman. The region is comparatively small, with a population of 2.2 million, but it still has many attractive qualities. The region is a hub for manufacturing; the centre of aluminium production in Turkey, metal casting, third nationally for shoe production, and the main source of wheat and biscuit production (approximately 450 thousand tonnes annually).
Konya was chosen in 2006-07 as the city with the second greatest economic potential. The region has also been called the capital of small and medium enterprises in Turkey, with approximately 35,000 firms in the region.
Mevlana has five universities, and is located just two hours away from the largest port (Mersin) in Turkey. It is also the site of the largest and best preserved Neolithic site found to date.
