Ankara is the capital of Turkey, and the second largest city in the country after Istanbul. The province has a total population of 4.4 million, of which 3.7 million live in the city proper. The region is particularly famous for its fruits and wine.
As the capital city of Turkey, the public sector takes up a significant proportion of employment in the area, with the seat of government and many other important departments centred in the city.
Many companies are headquartered in the city, including TAI, MKE, Aselsan, Havelsan, Roketsan, FNSS and Nurol. German bus and truck manufacturer MAN AG also has major production facilities in Ankara. The city is vital in the Turkish defence and aerospace sectors, with the International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) – one of the largest international arms expos – held in the city every year.
