Cartagena is the second largest city in the Murcia region, with a population of 211,996 people (2009), and is also a naval station. The city is an historically significant naval seaport, home to the Spanish Navy's Maritime Department of the Mediterranean, the main military harbour of Spain, with a large naval shipyard.
Cartagena is rich in slate, marble and limestone, which have created excellent industrial and mining activities. Despite this industrialisation, the city also enjoys a vibrant tourism industry, a diverse natural culture, and beautiful scenery, with a number of protected areas, all combining to make it a glorious location in which to live and work.
