Pontevedra has a population reaching almost one million inhabitants, and enjoys a flourishing tourism industry thanks to its historic architecture, and being home to the Rias Baixas Denominacion de Origen and part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park.
Housing the two main cities of Vigo and Pontevedra, the Pontevedra province enjoys a diverse economy, supported mainly by fishing and shipping activities. Vigo Port is Europe's largest fishing port, home to the world's largest fishing company - Pescanova, and the headquarters of the European Fisheries Agency.
The province is home to one of Galicia's largest industrial areas, consisting car manufacturing, shipyards, and supplementary industry. The province is also well-served by Vigo-Peinador Airport, providing flights to Paris, Brussels, and numerous domestic destinations.
