Key Competitive Attractions

Economy:

Gijon, for much of the 20th century,  was dependent on heavy industries. However, the tertiary sector and the population grew significantly in 2007, opening Gijon to newer expanding businesses.

The port is at the center of most businesses in the city and, other than directly related port activities, the economy is supported by tourism, steel, metallurgy, livestock rearing and fisheries.

Communications:

Road: The A-66, A-8 and AS-1 highways provide excellent connections between Gijon and the rest of Spain.

Rail: Regular train services to Madrid, Alicante, Zaragoza and Barcelone leave Gijon daily.

Air: The Asturias Airport provides daily flights to major Spanish and European cities.
