Zilina is a mountainous region in the north-west of the Slovak Republic named after its capital city. Zilina has a high proportion of forests and rich silicate deposits. The region is home to 700,000 people in an area of 6,808 km sq.
Zilina is also one of the most highly industrialised regions in Slovakia, with 72% of the regional income being generated from industrial activity. Industrial production varies, but the most active areas are metals, machinery, wood, cellulose, and paper products. The construction industry is also strong compared with the rest of Slovakia, accounting for 13% of the region’s turnover.
Foreign investment has been increasing in recent years, with Volkswagen, Kia and their suppliers generating the greatest amount of growth of any sector.
