Trnava has the smallest population of all Slovak regions at 551,003 inhabitants, and is one of the smallest regions geographically. Nevertheless, foreign capital has found a home in Trnava through the industrial sector, and the region boasts the highest level of agricultural land usage in Slovakia.

The Trnava region has a rich industrial heritage, fertile soil in the south supports a strong food industry, and the north has become an impressive industrial consumer base. The manufacturing sector is responsible for 40% of all employment in the region, with a range of industries including machinery, glass, automotive, chemicals and more esoteric goods.

Natural resources in Trnava have also boosted the regional economy, with natural gas and crude oil located in Gbely, and quarries throughout the region producing raw materials for construction. Tourism in the region is growing, spurred by the presence of several mineral springs, and providing excellent opportunities for developments in health tourism.
