Kosice is one of Slovakia’s eight self-governing regions. Named after the capital of the region, Kosice is home to 775,509 people in an area of 6,753 km sq, making it the second largest region in Slovakia. Kosice has a diverse, multicultural population with a broad economic base ranging from high tech industries through to the largest steel mill in Slovakia.
Culture is highly important in Kosice, and in 2013 the capital city will hold the European Capital of Culture title along with Marseille. Tourism is a growing field of investment in the Kosice region. Picturesque countryside along with natural geothermal waters, mineral springs and the largest water reservoir in Slovakia, have all helped to boost the region’s touristic profile.
Kosice is an important transnational crossroads, sharing a border with Hungary and Ukraine. Kosice boasts an impressive transportation infrastructure in road, rail and air, as well as a reliable telecommunications system.
