Bratislava region is named after the capital city of Slovakia. The city itself is home to 431,000 people whilst the region has a total population of 622,706. There are a total of 73 municipalities in the region, 7 of which are towns and these account for over 80% of the population. The region is the smallest in terms of geographical size, occupying 2,052 km sq, whilst the city is the largest in the country.
The region accounts for roughly one quarter of Slovakia’s GDP. The primary economic driver of the region is the services sector, with a significant tourist industry responsible for 1,338,497 overnight stays annually. Bratislava is the cultural centre of Slovakia, with significant immigrant populations and ethnic groups contributing to a diverse and vibrant culture.
Manufacturing accounts for approximately 20% of the regional GDP. Leading industries in this sector include chemicals, automobiles, machinery, electro-technical and food production.
