Banskobystricky is a district in Slovakia with a wide variation of economically prosperous and less developed districts. The region covers 9,455 km sq and is home to 653,697 people, of which 313,502 are economically active. Geographically, the region is highly variable with alpine ridges in the north, mountains and valleys in the centre, and plains on the southern edge. There are more protected areas in Banskobystricky than any other region in Slovakia; just over 1/3 of all land is protected, and this abundance of picturesque terrain is a major tourist attraction to the region.
Industrialisation is most prevalent in the north of the region, and metallurgy is the most important industrial activity, accounting for 60% of the total industrial export.
