Key Competitive Attractions
The Branicevo-Podunavlje region is situated in central to east Serbia, in close proximity to Belgrade. The region has a population of 402,787, and its biggest cities are Smederevo and Pozarevac.
The predominant sector in the region is agriculture, generating about 38% of regional income. Local products include cheese, honey and wine.
Smederevo is the centre for Serbia’s steel industry and has benefited from one of the largest influxes of FDI in recent years. US Steel Serbia is now one of the country’s largest exporters, as is health food exporter Bambi Banat. The two other main exporters in the region are electric power plants: TE Kostolac and GOSA. The region has considerable mining potential, for coal in particular, as well as lignite and wolfram.
Assistance and Support For New Business Investors
The Regional Development Agency is tasked with implementing development strategies and attracting foreign direct investment. In addition, 11 municipality service centres and the regional office of the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development in Pozarevac provide information and assistance on obtaining grants for enterprises and start-ups.
