The Banat region is divided between the three Serbian districts of north, south and central Banat. The historical region of Banat also extends to territories in Romania and Hungary. Serbian Banat is part of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. The principal cities are Pancevo, Zrenjanin, Kikinda and Vrsac. The total population is around 700,000. Banat is among the most ethnically diverse regions in Europe.
Principal business sectors include pharmaceuticals, food processing, metal processing, chemicals, construction, forestry and textiles. Agricultural produce includes potatoes, sugar beet, cabbage, tomatoes, peas and paprika.
Banat is a leading target for foreign investment in Serbia, with a level of investment reaching approximately €890 million in the period 2002-2008. Pancevo is the biggest petrochemical centre in the Balkans.
