The Backa region is located in the autonomous province of Vojvodina, and corresponds roughly to the Serbian districts of North, West and South Backa. A separate part of Backa is located in Hungary. Major cities include Novi Sad – Serbia’s second largest city, Subotica and Sombor. The total population of all three districts is 1,007,817, of which 59% Serbian and 16% is Hungarian.
Backa is an agricultural region, with significant production in wheat and corn, horticulture, fruit and livestock. Traditional manufacturing industries include textiles, tobacco, paper, pottery, cement, brick, beer and leather. Electronics, metal and chemical processing and graphic design are also significant sectors.
