South Romania covers an area of 34,489 km sq, is the home of 3,379,406 people, and is composed of seven sub-regions: Arges, Calarasi, Dambovita, Giurgiu, Lalomita, Prahova and Teleorman. The capital of the region is Calarasi, an industrial centre for various manufacturing activities, including wood production. The region is more widely known as a centre for the petrochemicals industry in Romania, as well as the traditional industry of glass production.
Over 70% of the land mass in South Romania is agricultural land, of which over 90% is privately owned. South Romania produces the largest amount of meat of any Romanian region, and is the country’s second largest producer of eggs and third largest producer of and milk.
South Romania boasts beautiful countryside, which attracts many tourists. The region’s cultural scene and preserved traditions also makes it a popular tourist destination, from festivals and fairs to ancient monasteries and castles.
